Have you ever heard the phrase “be fearless”? I am not a fan of that phrase. I am sure people think it sounds so bold, encouraging and the “correct” thing to say. Why don’t I care for it?
The Webster dictionary defines fearless as “free from fear”. Usually when the phrase “be fearless” is being used, it is a situation that in fact has fear tied to it. I think “be fearless” is a trite saying that really doesn’t help anyone. When you are fearful to try or do something, do the words “be fearless” really motivate you? They don’t me. At times, I think they can make a person feel worse. When you are feeling the fear and trying to overcome a situation, trying to focus on having no fear just isn’t helpful.
I think the phrase we need to start using is “be a fear facer”. The phrase, “be a fear facer”, acknowledges you have a fear and encourages you to face the fear and go after whatever it is you want to try or do. It isn’t a flippant phrase. It is a legitimate challenge that you can work through. I believe it gives instruction to the person as opposed to just telling them to “be fearless”.
I do believe as we face our fears and work through them, we are then fearless in a given situation where we have done the work afraid. I am focused in 2022 on being a “fear facer”! At the end of my journal writing each morning, I write the following:
COURAGEOUS
FEAR FACING
FAITH!
Be a “FEAR FACER”!
