When you think of travel, does your mind go to faraway places? Do you sometimes dream of where you want to go but don’t think you can afford it?
When I think of travel, many thoughts come to mind. Of course, I dream of the far away places. I have big dreams for those places someday. However, some of my best travel experiences have been to cities and towns that may not get publicity. Also, I love to meet the local people. Everyone has a story. You can learn so much about a place by visiting with the locals. It is such a rich experience and makes the travel so much more memorable. I also like to try the local restaurants and go to the locally owned shops. I get to possibly try food particular to that area. I also get the pleasure of meeting local business owners. I have had some great conversations with people at restaurants and in shops.
I want to share one of my travel experiences to a smaller town that was not on my radar. My husband and I visited the town of Winter Park, FL when we were attending a convention in Orlando a few years ago. I just picked the town out of the blue to spend our free day. What an absolute treat! We met a local man at a local Irish pub. During our conversation, we learned he was career military and ended up working for over 10 years for Disney as head of security after he retired from the military. He was so fascinating. Then we took a boat tour through the canals that went behind homes and attached the various lakes together. We saw where Mister Rogers (from “Mister Rogers Neighborhood” show) lived and the college he attended. We learned that his parents bought him the house when he was in college. He brought a piano to college, and it didn’t fit in the dorm room. So, his parents bought him a house so he had room for his piano! Random trivia but oh so interesting!
Topping the day off, we found the Morse Museum. The museum holds the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany. It was such a beautiful collection and such an interesting find on our unplanned day.
My point is to go and experience your world! We all have places fairly close to where we live that are interesting, have unique stories, interesting people, unique restaurants and shops.
